Chapter 8 Chevron Kits Regulations

The UK Department for Transport offers an extensive guide for UK road traffic signs. Information for Chapter 8 regulations can be found under ‘Traffic Safety Measures and Signs for Road Works and Temporary Situations”. The first part of the Chapter 8 guide covers Design and the second part covers Chapter 8 Operations.

Chapter 8 guidance has changed recently in relation to conspicuity vehicle markings in Wales and Scotland. New guidance has been issued in relation to vehicles operating on roads with speed limits 40mph and higher.

The reflectivity of the red material needs to now be a minimum of R3B compliant. This will ensure a higher level of safety is achieved. If you have vehicles that are operated and are required to stop on roads with speed limits of, or higher than 40mph, the following applies:

England: High Intensity/Diamond Grade R3B compliant markings are highly recommended

Wales and Scotland: High Intensity/Diamond Grade R3B compliant markings are now a legal requirement.

What types of vehicle chevron kits do you supply?

All About Chevrons supplies made-to-measure chevron kits for highway and motorway maintenance vehicles, commercial vans, escort vehicles and wide-load vehicles. Kits are available for a broad range of vehicle makes and models.

Chapter 8 vehicle chevrons are high-visibility rear markings used on vehicles that stop or work on high-speed roads. They typically combine fluorescent yellow material with red retroreflective markings to help approaching drivers see the vehicle more clearly.

Yes. Chevron kits are made to measure for the selected vehicle make, model and body style. Providing accurate vehicle details when ordering helps ensure that the kit is suitable for the available rear panels.

Self-adhesive kits are applied directly to the vehicle and are generally suited to permanent markings. Magnetic kits can be removed when they are not required, making them useful for hired, shared or multipurpose vehicles with suitable steel body panels.

Yes. Chapter 8 chevron kits are supplied fully assembled as standard. This means the individual red and yellow sections are already positioned together, helping to make installation quicker and more straightforward.

No. Magnetic markings will only attach securely to suitable ferrous metal surfaces. They will not adhere to aluminium, fibreglass, plastic or some composite panels, so the vehicle bodywork should be checked before ordering.

Yes. All About Chevrons supplies signage for escort and wide-load vehicles as well as kits for highway and motorway maintenance vehicles. The appropriate wording and markings will depend on the vehicle’s purpose.

Yes. Fully assembled self-adhesive kits are designed to make installation more manageable, and an application guide is available. The vehicle surface should be thoroughly cleaned, dry and prepared correctly before the markings are applied.

Keep the markings clean so they remain clearly visible and inspect them regularly for lifting, fading or damage. Avoid directing a pressure washer closely at the edges, as this may weaken the adhesive or cause the material to lift.

You should provide the vehicle manufacturer, model, year, body style and rear-door configuration. Details such as windows, ladders, handles, sensors and other fittings may also be needed to identify the most suitable kit.
